Ok, so I wasn't completely happy with the last redesign. Actually, I was upset that I couldn't move (or add) the widgets I wanted to (and it wasn't going to improve anytime soon), so I jumped ship over to Word Press.

I have to say, despite that I need to tweak a few things here and there (and create a decent banner), at least I have the ability to do that. The Word Press version is also dead-on with the design I initially wanted. I have room to grow artistically with my website now, and that helps to keep me motivated in the studio.

So here you go! I'll be adding to, and editing, the design for the next few months, but I really do like this one; it's a keeper. Check out the Word Press edition of Megwolfe.net!

Well, it's finally happened. After a year of mulling it over, I've decided to jump in and redesign Megwolfe.net. Thankfully, by the time I got around to it, the crew at Typepad came up with a template close enough to what I initially wanted. Unfortunately, it isn't *quite* perfect, but it'll do for now.

This month the crew of White Walls / Shooting Gallery open the doors to another addition, 941 Geary (right around the corner from White Walls), a gallery that is anticipated to show established and international artists alike. Though mums the word on who all the gallery will be lining up, the space itself is beautiful, and impressive (it's also huge, so artists will have an insane amount of space to work with).

48 Hour Film Project at Arc Gallery

Well, it's 6:30 am, and I'm awake and caffeinated! Unfortunately, that won't make this note any less direct. Sorry guys, a girl's got to sleep sometime.

Last week the crew from AntiSocialites camped out at Arc Gallery to shoot their short film "Con/Artist". The film is part of the 48 Hour Film Project, and uses the PaperView group show as part of the set. Rumor has it, the four large pigeon works I submitted to the show, have made their way into some key scenes. Of course, I'll be investigating this personally!

Hipster Apocalypse on Fecal Face

Well kids, I hope you rationed your bottled coffees, because shots from the Hipster Apocalypse have made their way to Fecal Face! (again, kudos due to Shaun Roberts for covering the show) No doubt the fallout from the reception took its toll on many (myself included), but if you somehow slept through the action, you can check out the artwork until July 3rd.

Of course, until you venture out of your bunker to survey the damage, Fecal Face has the report.

Dear diary, I'd really like a dolly. No, not the creepy kind I found in the hallway while I was doing laundry (though that was cool too), I mean the kind on wheels that I can haul artwork with. Let's keep it practical.

With two group shows this month, Hipster Apocalypse (reception photos coming soon), and the upcoming PaperView at Arc Gallery, it's been a great month. Albeit, a busy one. I've spent way more time writing, promoting, and framing (as well as balancing my freelance gig) than creating. But this is normal when you've got shows rolling down the pike, and it has to be done. No complaints.

So this Friday (June 11) from 7-10p, check out the next group show, PaperView at Arc Gallery. Arc is a great space, and I highly recommend checking it out. Hope to see you guys there!

"Your Last Moment" in the Bay Guardian

There's been some great press surrounding the Hipster Apocalypse show at Cafe Royale, including blog entries from both the Tenderblog and SFCitizen, and now the Bay Guardian has also jumped aboard to promote the show! This afternoon the print edition printed "Your Last Moment" (one of two works), along with the show's bio. Looks like it's going to be a fun reception tonight!

Ok, I admit, sometimes I tape cheesy quotes over my drafting table. This is a really good one though, I got it off of a horoscope. It also popped up the day after I got one saying I needed a new love life asap (that one really made me laugh), so take it with a grain of salt.

"Play to your strengths." It's simple, and when you think about it, it's a pretty strong little quote. Well, it gets me going anyway. But I'm going to challenge it and say "play to your weaknesses" too.

Reception @ Gallery Heist

Just wanted to drop a quick note to say thanks for turning out for the Heist show, guys! The crowd was awesome - tons of people everywhere, checking out and discussing art. Unfortunately, I didn't grab very many pics (once again, I was too busy chatting and catching up.. the best part about receptions!), but I did snag this one of the crowd.

Next up, another potential group show on the horizon! Details coming soon. In the mean time though, I'm off to work at the drafting table for my usual 4am run. Getting really close to finishing up this labor of love (three months in the making, can't wait to be done).

Slowing Down with Jazz

There's something about jazz music on a cold San Francisco night that is relaxing. Especially after the long holiday, it's a luxury to be back in my studio, chilling out to the awesomeness of Herbie Hancock.

Maybe it's a personal thing, but jazz reminds me to slow down and become more considerate. It also reminds me that improvisation can reap better results. Both of which are part of my goals for the New Year (note that I didn't say "resolution" - I feel like resolutions aren't created, or taken, as seriously).

I've never been a super-reclusive artist. Actually, I like to keep things as open and accessible as possible. I want people to see glimmers of the studio process, because process can be as important as the finished product (if not more so). Even with work that takes five minutes to create, there are multiple levels of emotion and skill that are accessed to create that work of art; I'm not sure many people are aware of that..

As I'm writing this, I have exactly one week left to finish the remaining drawings for my solo show at Cafe Royale. It's not much time, but things are steadily falling into place.. especially since I've been awake until 5am every night.

I also successfully received my frames and put together three of the small pieces, after so much indecision on my part (you can read all about it on Twitter. I feel so bad for my framers..). I'm pretty excited about them though. I decided not to use the mats I had ordered, and instead, created some DiY floating effects that I think will tie in nicely with the release of Sociology #2, and the other give-away goodies at the show.

Now I just have to finish up everything else!

School's Out!

Over the summer semester, I had the pleasure of instructing several Art Experience (highschool) courses at the Academy of Art. I taught my usual Still Life Painting, plus Mural, and some short-term Painting Seminar classes. Things were tight, but to be honest, I've never been happier working so hard. Out with the old, and in with the new. The former "Sketch for.." section of MegWolfe.net has been updated with a Flickr widget! Now, when I upload sketches and in progress, you'll see them instantly appear on www.megwolfe.net! Exciting! (well, exciting for me anyway.. it's less work)

The sketches are also automated to pop up on Twitter and Facebook, so if you're following me via either channel, you'll get them there too. However, I plan to keep the updates reasonably moderate (one or two images a week), so as not to bombard anyone. I probably tweet more than enough as it stands.

Working On the Solo Show

The days are rolling by, and I've been hard at work on new drawings for my September solo show at Cafe Royale. So far, so good. The pieces in this series will be 22 x 28 inches, graphite pencil on paper. After working on the "ginormous" 44 x 60 inch drawing from a previous video blog, I'm taking a break from the wax pencil.. I think I've punished myself enough, though why I was punishing myself, I'm still unsure.

In terms of concept.. I'm sticking with the same ideas, but pushing them further. For this show, I'm focusing more on hoards of pigeons, and chaotic scenes. I was always interested in that aspect, but now I want to be less subtle, and more dynamic. Honestly, I can't wait to get more of this series finished so I can see them together in sequence. It's exciting!

Lastly, I updated www.megwolfe.net with a new Sketch. Sooner or later I'll get caught up with the back-log of sketches and dump them all into a post.. but for now, the one for April / May will have to do.

Sharpie Fun w/ David Ball

Apparently, artist / curator David Ball has become a walking-talking canvas. Sometime over the past few months, David lost a small tuft of hair, and ever since then he's been inviting artists to draw on the spot with a sharpie.

The designs have included everything from lightbulbs, to flowers, to the Babylon Falling logo, and also.. *dun dun dun* a Megan Wolfe pigeon! Roosting happily in a nest of hair. My finest work yet.

Other artists previously shown on David's scalp are Christopher Burch, David Young V, and students from AAU's illustration department.

It's 2:00 am, and before I shove off to bed, I wanted to drop you guys a photo from last weekend. However, more soon to come! As soon as I get all of the pics together, I'll be putting a nice slideshow together (yay!) that will probably end up being the next Video Blog.

In terms of how the event itself went.. the Hang Sketch Rally was intense, and it was an honor to be a special guest artist at the gallery. At the end of the day, Hang even chose to keep the unsold drawings for further promotion and potential sales (they're also keeping the prices at $50). So, the sketches I did that didn't immediately find a home, are now, actually, hanging at Hang Gallery! Sweet!

On the Bookshelf - Art Reads for January, 2009

I am a book junkie. As much as I consume (free) digital content, there's nothing that beats the feel of print. And, every year, around this time, my library grows a bit larger. Because, finally, I get to relish all those awesome reads discovered during the year.. the ones I put aside, and said "maybe for Christmas.."

Here's just a few I recently picked up:

Lives of the Artists, by Calvin Tomkins

Short biographies written about contemporary artists, including Damien Hirst, Cindy Sherman, John Currin, and others. I'm in the middle of Julian Schnabel's now, and the biography on Damien Hirst gave me a newfound respect for his work. I really didn't like him before (I don't care much for sensationalistic art, "shock" art), but his interest in time and mortality is not that much different from my own. Easy to read book, and very engaging.

Sparrow #2: Phil Hale, by IDW Publishing

Yesterday, I got lucky and found this at a used bookstore. Phil Hale is one of my favorite painters / illustrators, and I couldn't pass it up (especially not at $6). Gritty, dramatic, monochromatic, surrealistic, Phil is one of a few artists that has continued to inspire me again and again. And, at 6 x 6 inches, "Sparrow" is small and light enough that I can carry him around with me when I leave the studio.

The Polaroid Book, Taschen

Books by Taschen are usually pretty cheap (under $20 for a hard backed book with good artwork), and I picked this up yesterday when I got "Sparrow". Lately, I've been wanting to delve back into photography, try new things, and this has a variety of interesting fine art photos. Some are quite textural, having been post processed in the dark room, and others are pretty straight forward. Features 254 photos by 203 artists (including Chuck Close and Cay Lang, author of Taking the Leap).

Happy Holidays, & (Almost) Finished Plant Drawing

Amid all the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, I finished up the piece that was in progress. I still feel like there should be more detail in the foreground, or a few adjustments made, to say the least. So I will probably come back and make some fixes between projects in the new year.

This piece is 22 x 30 inches, wax pencil on paper. Title pending (though I have some ideas).

Also, this is probably my last update before Christmas, so happy holidays, guys! I hope you stay safe in your travels, and enjoy the yumminess that comes with holiday food and goodies! (I know I'm looking forward to it)

Here we are, the "in progress" I mentioned in 001 of the Video Blog. Now that the under sketch is correct, it's coming along smoothly. There's still plenty of work to do though, as this piece is 22 x 30 inches (because of the size, I'm also working with the drawing sideways.. it doesn't fit on my table otherwise!).

Besides promised in progress, I have some awesome pigeon-related news! Bucheon Contemporary Gallery has picked up some of my work for a group show in January! They're also taking three of my smaller pigeon works with them to Aqua Art Miami in December! Sweet!

AAU Faculty Alumni Auction

I haven't been on top of things as far as updates go. The Academy of Art University Faculty / Alumni Auction has already passed, and I failed to keep track of my announcements.

However, the good news is that I sold some work (including this piece), and, because I was volunteering, I also got to wrap up my work for the collector. Exciting!

Aside from that, this week is about getting back on track. I started a new long drawing, and I almost have Sociology #2 ready to print. I'll be posting in progress pics of each, as soon as I can.

In the meantime, I uploaded a new sketch for 11/12/08.

Trying to get this entry in, but honestly, I'm super distracted by election coverage. I trust you are too, so you won't notice my second rate entry (until tomorrow).

Anywho, after two years of love, my sketchbook-binder fell apart, and I needed to get a new one. I finally picked one up yesterday; my reward for 4.5 hours of waiting to vote (after four hours, stickers just don't do it for me).

I never actually made a cover for the old one, but I wanted to definitely do something for the new one. So I brewed up some tea, and made a mess. This guy was the result.

Sociology #2

For the past couple of weeks I've been kicking around ideas for Sociology #2. Today, at home, sick, I decided to "screw planning" and jump in.

It couldn't have worked out better. My original plan was to make the art in #2 less conceptual, and slightly more representational. There's the tease for you. This is the cover image:

The zine is still not finished yet, of course, and it might not be until after the Open Studio on October 26th, but I couldn't be happier. It'll be super cool when it's done.

New Work, and Printing for Punishment

Apologies for the long delay. The past two weeks have been pretty hectic. Aside from conducting workshops with the Academy and plugging my class with Sharon Art Studio, I'm also planning for my Open Studio that occurs in three weeks. It's a lot of work, and I feel like I'm spinning my wheels. I've managed to create new and awesome business cards (each is more like a limited edition print than business card), and at the same time, I royally fubard the postcards for my Open Studio.

Honestly, I got a little in over my head with trying to custom print everything. I've been stubborn to the point of being stupid. I really don't like print companies because my images are almost always two values off, but I should have sucked it up and used one this time. Custom printing works beautifully, but not on larger prints, at the required volume. Not with my printer, anyway.

I guess this is a lesson learned (I still like the idea though, so maybe not). Stay tuned for more Open Studio adventures; I'm sure I'll have several to share soon.

Finally, I also updated with a new sketch for 09/30/08. So there's a nice little goody for your patience.

Macy's Passport Gala, and Sociology Sketches

This week I helped out my buddy Mark Elliot with his mural for the Macy's Passport Gala. Unfortunately, I could only chip in with the preliminary work, as my workshop at AAU conflicted with the time frame of the actual event. All the same, it was a fun experience, and I can't wait to see pics of the finished piece.

I started this mini-series with the intention of stopping with six. Of course, after six you get ideas, and it's hard to stop. But this is the last for now. Time to move on.

I'm also thrilled because Albert bought me a new MacBook for our anniversary, and I can actually TYPE my posts in Typepad, instead of copying them over from my word processor. It's awesome! I may even start video blogging now that I have a camera. Except I hate listening to myself, so that might not work out after all. We'll see.

Sociology update: I'm out of zines, guys. If you requested one during the offer, I'm going to mail them out on Friday. Thanks, and I hope you guys enjoy them! (let me know what you think, too, feedback is always cool)

"Sociology" Zine Now at City Lights!

It's official, City Lights Bookstore in San Francisco is carrying several copies of my zine, Sociology! If you happen to be in the Bay Area, stop by and pick up a copy! They're priced at $2 each. Pretty sweet for something partially hand-drawn, signed, and numbered.

Finished Carrion #2

Carrion #2 is in the bag! At this point I'm going to take a little time, work on "My Flesh #6", and evaluate my direction. I'm not sure how many of "Carrion" I want to make.. three, four, six? Or even stop with two. Either way, I want an even balance of different works, not too much of one thing or the other.

I also have some "Sociology" news (aside from my upcoming giveaway for you guys). I can't say too much before I'm sure, but I've been on the hunt for distribution, and it looks like someone might pick it up (if you've been following my Twitter or Facebook accounts, you already know). Keep your fingers crossed!

Carrion #2 In Progress, and Sociology

After five "Flesh" drawings, it's time for another break before diving into number six. So it's back to the pigeons with Carrion #2! Sweetness.

Other than that, I've been hard at work on an eight-page, mini-sized zine I'm calling "Sociology". Eventually, I'll have a little give-away for you guys that frequent the blog, but, for now, here's a preview of the cover.

They're pretty limited in quantity; I made 50 of issue #1. They're numbered on the back, signed, and all of them have some hand-drawn elements on each of the interior pages. More pics soon to come!

I Be A Teachin'

Summer semester has come to a close at the Academy of Art, and I'm sad to see it go. I had some super-cool students that were a lot of fun, and the feedback I got at the final exhibition was better than chocolate. Needless to say, I'm pretty stoked for the Fall.

Aside from teaching at the Academy, I will also be doing a 5-week workshop with Sharon Art Studio in San Francisco. "Creative Composition in Graphite" is intended to delve into my process, employing some photographic elements and creativity exercises. All the more reason to be stoked.

"Common Descent" at 111 Minna

This month 111 Minna has a show featuring a couple of my school chums, Brett Amory and John Wentz, along with artists Seth Armstrong and Andrew Hem.
